Munches have become a way to meet
like-minded kinky folk in an informal and hassle-free environment.
Usually the setting for a "munch" is a restaurant or coffee shop
or similar environment.
The first munch was started here in the SF Bay Area. One day (in
approximately April, 1992), a woman named STella™posted a
news article to Usenet newsgroup, alt.sex.bondage, saying she would
be at Kirk's in Palo Alto (a hamburger take-out restaurant 30 miles
south of SF) that evening and that anyone wishing to join her was
welcome. Several people did show up that night and hence the first
"BurgerMunch" (later shortened to munch) was born.
Several years later, munches have become a common occurrence nationwide
(and in some cases, worldwide) thanks to the Internet. Here in the
SF Bay Area, the original BurgerMunch may be long gone, but there
are numerous other munches that take place regularly

Who to expect to meet:
The SF Munch draws about 40 to 50 people each month, ages range
from folks in their 50’s and 60’s to at least one regular
who is under 20, most of our group is in their 30’s and 40’s.
It is a mixed crowd of men and women , some into D/s, some
into SM, some into fetish attire, we see people who are just discovering
the scene and people who have been educators and authors that have
been recognized in the community for many years.

A
Beginners Guide to BDSM Munches is
an article written by SF local Jay Wiseman. It delves deeper into
his perspective of what a munch is, what it isn't, "proper" munch
etiquette, and provides a good solid overview of how to navigate
the interesting social dynamic that is a BDSM munch.
The Article
is excellent reading for anyone about to plunge into the BDSM social
circuit. |

$5.00
Admission fee
One of the qualities that makes the munch distinctive is that the restaurant is excellent,
the food and service are first rate, and they do cost a bit more
The restaurant does a big bar business of Friday & Saturday night, so we need to motivate staff
to give up evening shifts in order to serve us in the afternoon. Unlike those of us in the community
who are motivated simply by the desire to serve, many service professionals are motivated by money.
In order to be sure that the service staff is well compensated, and to be certain that everyone pays
for their beverages, there will be a $5.00/person charge for everyone that comes to the munch, this will
cover all coffee and soft drinks.
In addition to soft drinks, the Thirsty Bear brews beer, and has a wonderful
lunch menu Each person is expected to pay $5.00 for
soft drinks, plus whatever else they order. Please add 25% to the menu price to cover tax and gratuity.
Almost every month, we have someone who leaves without paying, or without paying enough. Please remember that
as much fun as we are, hosting this event is a business decision for the restaurant, let's keep them wanting us back.
We want to make sure that everyone still considers the SF/SOJ Munch to be a good value, so in partnership with the SF Citadel,
everyone who pays $5.00 for the munch will get a receipt which can be redeemed for $5.00 off admission to a SF Citadel event.
The coupon is good for any Saturday night, SF Citadel sponsored, party during the next three months.
